20th ANNUAL BIA RENAISSANCE BUILDING AND REMODELING 2005 OVERALL GRAND AWARD WINNER
Welch and Weeks LLC has always loved Hawaii's rich historic architectural past. They recommend saving existing classic homes and remodeling to fit it's owners needs. This is an example of their work...Nestled in the back of Manoa Valley, the original 1926 stucco on stone cottage needed to be expanded for a growing family without destroying the home's original character. The historical style of the home was kept by using rough stucco, shiplap, and traditional bungalow forms for the new master suite over new garage addition (right side of photo). Additional elements were developed to give the new expansion extra value, dining room, a children's play loft, a dumb waiter and a new screened lanai.
21st ANNUAL BIA RENAISSANCE BUILDING AND REMODELING 2006 OVERALL GRAND AWARD WINNER
Built on a steep wooded hillside in Manoa, Oahu, Hawaii, the "Tree House" was intended to set an example for a more sensitive response to the land. A family with three children wanted a "compact" home that wouldn't change the tropical character of the lush hillside. The project preserved all the major trees on the site which required adjusting the house dimensions and orientation during the design process.
22ND ANNUAL BIA RENAISSANCE BUILDING AND REMODELING 2007 OVERALL GRAND AWARD WINNER
Welch and Weeks traveled to the small island of Lanai from Honolulu to create this "Luna" plantation style home. Victor likes to use the phrase coined by Robert A.M. Stern, "modern traditionalism", a blend of traditional style with modern planning. The home is protected by a step double pitched "Dickey" roof clad in copper standing seam material. The walls are board and batten. Windows and doors were custom made in Honolulu. This project was a challenge because of its location...you just can't go to the local hardware store and buy the material you need. Everything needs to be shipped in. This did not mean the budget or tight schedule was adjusted. With proper planning and a very good contractor, the project was a complete success.
27ND ANNUAL BIA RENAISSANCE BUILDING AND REMODELING 2012 OVERALL GRAND AWARD WINNER
This new Kahala beach home is inspired by the past glory of the once sleepy beachside community. Old Hawaii architecture is rejuvenated in modern plan and materials. Concrete siding and trim looks like wood but is a green material and will last years to come. Engineered “plantation harvested” wood flooring has a tough factory finish and fiberglass windows will hold up well in the salt air. Split system air conditioning in bedrooms provides comfort on those rare hot nights. The house was designed to take advantage of the trade winds to cool the public spaces with lots of little areas to lie around, read a book, or just relax.
2017 BIA-HAWAII Renaissance Overall Grand Award Best New Residence
This house is built on a beautiful lot in one of Hawaii’s most iconic neighborhoods, developed by Boyd MacNaughton decades ago. Our client saw the potential and hired us to design a “home” for his young family. The lot fronts an amazing park, with views of Diamond Head crater.
The existing neighborhood is a classic older subdivision in the Kahala/Diamond Head area with a number of Ossipoff designed homes and other Kamaaina style homes. The idea was to “fit in” with the existing architecture yet provide the home with modern conveniences and layout. The overall look is classic vintage Hawaiiana with steep double pitch roof. The home consists of over 3,200 square feet of total indoor/outdoor living.
In the end, all the client’s objectives were met a stylish house designed with “Passive Environmental Systems” to create a low energy, environmentally friendly home that fits the neighborhood and will provide many happy years for their family.
